The European Sailing Fraternity, through the Balearic Chapter has organized in the Consulat del Mar with support of the Government of the Balearic Islands, a conference named “The Ships of Discovery” by the brother Diego Colón y Carvajal with an introduction by also brother Camilo José Cela.

CONFERENCE ABOUT THE DISCORERY OF AMERICA SHIPS BY DIEGO COLON DE CARVAJAL, OFFSPRING OF COLUMBUS, UNDER THE ACTS OF THE EUROPEAN SAILING FRATERNITY IN MAJORCA.

The conference aims to present the work and replicas that has been made of the vessels used by Christopher Columbus to discover America.

In the conference Diego Colón makes an overview of the historical data and how to obtain and design individual replicates of the ships used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage. The methods used to design a full-scale reproduction of a vessel for which there are no plans nowadays. Also it was analyzed the problems of navigation of the first replica of the Santa Maria in his first sail.

In the story it was mentioned the strategic value in the fifteenth century of the knowledge of seamanship and it was showed an exemple  in the ban to teach navigation skills to Muslims, Jews and infidels. This ban affected the construction, the art of cartography and navigation.

The analysis of the artistic history of the ships of the late Middle Ages is another of the sections covered in the conference. It was usually to use the boats reproduced in paints or sculptural images to create a design of an ancient boat, but this method can lead to errors when performing a full-scale replica. There were reviewed individual vessels of the fifteenth century and its evolution as “coca ship”, “carraca” and “nao”, and the advange  the ratchet and the ship are reviewed as the Iberian peoples of the Atlantic show an advantage of the Atlantic Iberian people over other builders of Europe thanks to its situations in the map where it was a confluence of knowledge from the Mediterranean sea and Atlantic Ocean.

With respect to the ships of discovery he explained that there were three, one a “nao” and two were “carabelas”. The captain ship was the ship called Santa Maria, but originally called the “Galllega” or “Marigalante” and self Columbus changed. The name of caravels come from a Byzantine boats called “Carabo” in Arabic terminology. Regarding the caravel “la Niñal” he emphasized that  it was what led the exploration of Cuba on the second trip of Columbus.

The following he gave an overview of the methods of calculating the tonnage of the vessels from the time of discovery and the action of verification from the authorities before the boats of that time getting to the sea.

Finally he took a look about the differences between the vessels of Columbus and the the currently reproductions mainly based on the speeds reached of the boats in relation with the replica and the days of difference of the fist trip and the trips nowadays. Therefore he concludes that the true replica of Columbus’s ship is still no designing nowadays.
